  3. do is I look at his work in what I call four frame 
  4. zones. Because McLuhan often seems so 
  5. paradoxical and because his influence exists on a 
  6. number of levels, I decided the only way to make 
  7. sense of him was to approach him from four quite 
  8. different directions, and then put the thing 
  9. together again. Not like Humpty Dumpty, but put it 
  10. together again. So, in doing this, what I look at is 
  11. his core contribution first. And what I discovered 
  12. there which I think is helpful for anybody who is 
  13. rereading McLuhan, is that he is best read on his 
  14. own terms. And what he said about his work was
